Where is your inspiration coming from ?
My work starts with observing the forms of plants, animals and insects inhabiting tropical rainforests. After observing their strange and charming appearance, I imagine and combine shapes, textures, colors and patterns that are interesting
What are you trying to communicate in particular with your artwork?
Although there are still a lot of inexperienced parts, I hope to be able to present a new aesthetic to the viewer. I want to convey my unique formative language, which is a bit out of the ordinary beauty.
Which material you prefer to use and why ?
Epoxy resin. Epoxy resins are commonly used for bonding. Especially because the epoxy I use is hardened in 30 minutes and 5 minutes. It feels attractive to be able to coat shapes with epoxy to make the shape stronger and to make various colors and patterns. Recently I have focused on creating a cracked pattern through time differences when it dries.
How much value do you give to researching material for your creations?
The study of materials seems to be the most important problem for me. Because discovering new possibilities of material and making it mine is deeply connected with my work world view.
Is it more important for you the process, or the final artwork itself?
In the past it was a result. I’ve felt that I was struggled with the time to make an immediate result. But now the process is more important than the result. I think the process has become more important and I can enjoy the work itself. Imagining the creatures living in the unknown forests and realizing them makes me a new dream from the reality I belong to and the process gives me a secret pleasure. Likewise I think that the process of stereoscopicizing these imaginary objects is a journey toward the world hidden in veils.
Is there an artist you prefer and why ?
I like the jewelry of Ramon Puiq cuyas. When I see his work, I feel that freedom and rule coexist in a world. It seems to have a solid but poetic rhyme, and it seems to have put the different beautiful sensibilities of men and women in one place. Fortunately, when I participated the jewelry fair ‘JOYA’ in Spain, I visited the school where he worked. I still remember the excitement of meeting the creator who created the work I looked at for a long time.
Have you ever thought to collaborate with other artists , or you like to work on your own?
I have not experienced collaboration yet. It was very impressive that I had seen a relay exhibition where one half of the necklace was made and the other half was made by another artist to complete a necklace. If I have a chance, I would like to try. It seems to be a unique experience to meet unexpected results when my thoughts are combined with other people's thoughts.
Where do you feel you are at with this last collection?
The titled ‘Our earring guide’ exhibited with ‘JEWELRIC RONDO’ and about 200 pairs of earrings in Korea Craft&Design Foundation, Seoul. Earrings are less burdensome in terms of wear and price, we were able to familiarize with people who have not even purchased contemporary jewelry. This exhibition was an opportunity to think about work for sale. For all artists, I think that survival is a matter to be solved. I felt that it was necessary to select the crude element to be a product, and to work iteratively.
What have you discovered of yourself, are you satisfied ?
I am usually unsatisfied with my work and everyday life even sometimes I think I might got a disease of dissatisfaction. In order to overcome this, I try to fill in the empty space little by little through the time I work. It's not have we act because we have power. Instread I can definitely feel we get power because we act. Live one day hard, as the whole life flows.
