Where is your inspiration coming from ?
My inspiration comes from just about everywhere and anything... the movement of the ocean, the shape of a leaf, a beautiful outfit... I am inspired by the beauty surrounding us.
What are you trying to communicate in particular with your artwork?
I would like for people to appreciate handcrafted unique items again...quality and uniqueness over quantity. Craft takes time, love and patience and I would like for women to feel very special while wearing my jewelry, understanding the time and love that was invested in each piece.
Which material you prefer to use and why ?
I like to work with the smooth passing thread. It lends itself beautifully to making very intricate pieces yet manages to hold on a shape because of the technique. I like the idea that with a very thin thread you can make a three dimensional piece.
How much value do you give to researching material for your creations?
If you are talking about the creations themselves then I just like to be naturally inspired... I like the inspiration to "speak" to me. If it is about the materials I use, I spend a long time searching for quality materials. For instance, the thread I use is manufactured specifically as per my own, exacting specifications.
Is it more important for you the process, or the final artwork itself?
The process is definitely more important for me. I love the beginning... When I don't quite know where it's going to take me and I definitely like when the piece starts to take shape. I go into a meditative state while working. I feel sad sometimes when I finish an artwork, especially the major statement pieces. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend.
Is there an artist you prefer and why ?
Samy David, a ceramic artist. He creates wild and lovely ceramics with a touch of gold. I love that his pieces have a life, movement and definitely make a statement.
Have you ever thought to collaborate with other artists, or you like to work on your own?
I would like to collaborate with other artists. Not necessarily jewelry makers, although it would be interesting for me to see how my technique will enhance someone else's piece or vice versa. I can see my art being incorporated in fashion as well as home décor.
Where do you feel you are at with this last collection?
I am just on the tip of the iceberg. I don't really work by collections. Collections are made by demand of the consumer. I like to make one of a kind pieces that stand out on their own. They don't necessarily have to "speak" to other pieces. Each piece is a whole.
What have you discovered of yourself, are you satisfied ?
I discovered that I love being on my own and working. I love that my hands work and my mind wonders. I am very satisfied with my craft and want to succeed so that I can continue to indulge myself and create endlessly. The day that I realized what I wanted to do with my life, create art, is the happiest day of my life other than the day I gave birth to my daughter.
