Artist YeJin Choi is the winner this week of an Award at Preziosa Young competition 2025 at Mydaybyday Gallery in Rome
"Plants serve as a medium of communication, and flowers, in particular, carry deep, symbolic meanings. Much like how flowers are given to celebrate an anniversary like birthdays and weddings, they offer us emotional comfort and happiness. Flowers possess a remarkable vitality, growing and adapting to their environment. Blooming, which occurs only after the flower has received the right balance of water, sunlight, and nutrients, represents the peak of this vitality. A fully bloomed flower is the result of constant life processes happening within, radiating a sense of energy and vitality. Through this, we experience feelings of happiness, emotional healing, and a sense of calm. Shrinkles is a type of plastic that can be drawn on like paper using various coloring tools, such as colored pencils. When it’s heated, it shrinks to as little as 1/7 of its original size, transforming the drawn images into more delicate and intricate forms. The dynamic, fluid shapes created during the shrinking process evoke the feeling of watching a plant’s growth sped up in time-lapse. Shrinkles has rarely been used in jewelry design. However, its flexibility and durability make it less prone to breakage, and its lightweight nature provides a significant advantage when crafted into jewelry. With this in mind, I aim to evoke emotional responses by reconstructing the features found in flowers."
