"The primary basis of my practice is driven by the medium of metal, predominantly Titanium and its unique working properties. I consciously make work with a minimum amount of waste leading me to use shapes and forms in which I can make use of all the material, and most recently, I have begun adapting parts used in industry that are prefabricated or manufactured to my specifications. The industrial nature of the material informs ideas and concepts related to simplicity, boldness, repetition of line, shape and form relating to structural elements and forms found in architecture. Hot forged Titanium becomes pliable and oxidises to quite a dark grey, enabling me to bend thick material quite easily. When anodised, Titanium shows a limited range of colours which can be either subtle and muted or bold and bright. When left natural the Titanium is a silvery grey and contrasts well with bright silver. My practice is not conceptually based. As I make, my ideas form from the material, how it looks, how I can work it, its limitations and idiosyncrasies. Shapes and the form of the material also dictates what I may make. I just like to make usually without any big ideas behind it, the more I make, the more ideas form. I do not like to waste any material, I try and make things work and I have kept every scrap and offcut. After having an opportunity to work with Fabrice Schaeffer in Switzerland and Jose Marin in Spain, I have experimented with hot forging and adding precious metals to the surface of titanium. As well as being able to join the material by welding." Vanessa Williams
